How Do You Play Mahjong Titans?

how to play mahjong titans

Mahjong Titans is the classic “I’ll play one round” game that somehow turns into “why is it dark outside?” It’s Mahjong Solitaire, not the 4-player table game. Your job is simple: clear the entire layout by matching removable pairs.

What You Need to Play

  • Mahjong Titans (or any Mahjong Solitaire version with the same rules)
  • A mouse or trackpad
  • Optional but extremely comforting:
    • Undo
    • Hint
    • Shuffle (if your version includes it)

Setup

  1. Open Mahjong Titans.
  2. Choose a layout (examples: Turtle, Dragon, Cat, Fortress, Crab, Spider).
  3. Start the board.

How to Play

  1. Find two matching tiles.
    • Most tiles must match exactly (same symbol/number).
  2. Make sure both tiles are “free.”
    A tile is free if:
    • Nothing is on top of it, and
    • At least one side is open (left or right), meaning it can slide out.
  3. Select the first tile, then select its match to remove the pair.
  4. Repeat, uncovering deeper tiles as you clear the upper layers.
  5. Use special-tile rules correctly:
    • Flowers: any flower can match any other flower.
    • Seasons: any season can match any other season.
    • Winds and Dragons: must match exactly (no mixing).
  6. If you’re stuck:
    • Use Hint to reveal an available match (if available).
    • Use Undo to reverse a move.
    • Use Shuffle if your version offers it (not all do).

How the Game Ends

Mahjong Titans ends when:

  • You clear all tiles (win), or
  • There are no legal moves left (loss).

How to Win

You win by removing every tile from the layout.

Strategy Tips

  • Prioritize unlocking tiles, not just making matches.
A match that opens new tiles is usually better than a match that changes nothing.
  • Don’t eliminate a tile type too early.
If you see 3–4 of the same tile available in different spots, removing the “wrong” pair can strand the others.
  • Clear the top and outer edges first.
These tiles usually block access to deeper layers.
  • Use Flowers and Seasons thoughtfully.
Since any flower/season can match within its group, it’s easy to make a legal match that causes a future dead end. This is where many players get confused: the rules allow it, but the board punishes it.
  • If you care about score: keep a steady pace and avoid long pauses (some versions reward speed and streaks).

Common Mistakes

  • Matching a pair that doesn’t unlock anything (and slowly sealing your fate).
  • Thinking a tile is free just because you can see it.
If it has a tile on top or both sides blocked, it’s not playable.
  • Treating Winds/Dragons like Flowers/Seasons.
Winds and Dragons must match exactly.
  • Only looking one move ahead.
The board loves leaving you with two matching tiles that can’t ever become free.

Quick Reference Summary

  • Goal: Remove all tiles
  • Legal match:
    • Most tiles: exact match
    • Flowers: match any flower
    • Seasons: match any season
    • Winds/Dragons: exact match only
  • “Free tile” rule:
    • No tile on top
    • Left or right side open
  • Win: board cleared
  • Lose: no moves left
